how "some" people vote...

I had a conversation with some people today on voting and I was surprised (and in some ways not surprised) on how they vote. Here are some of the things they say on how they vote:

I only vote based on race, doesn't matter if it's republican or democrat.

I vote based on sex.

I'll vote for the one person I wanted to vote for and often times just "Eny, Meany, Miney, Moe" the rest.

I vote against the other party simply because I hate them.

I vote based on one issue alone, the rest don't matter.

I vote based on what's in it for me.

These are most of the reasons I heard. And this was a group of people. Now, I know people don't want to believe it, but these kinds of people are in every city and town in the country. I'd like to think there are more sensible people out there that vote more intelligently.

RE: how "some" people vote...

I have to say that this upcoming governor's election is the toughest one for me ever.  BACO ("Before Alan Came Out") we considered ourselves Republican and voted straight party lines.  This time, I don't have a clue who to vote for!  How do we get past the mud slinging and get to the truth behind the candidates?  Every time I think I've decided, some new garbage comes out.  It's so confusing!!

Just about every campaign ad is mud slinging.  And then a nice one comes on......then suddenly the opponent comes on later revealing things about the other one and you like

I really wanted to like the old bag (teehee) but I just don't!  During the debate, she kept looking up at Perry & whining about & to him.  That turned me off completely.  And I can't STAND Kinky!!!  What a sleeze bag!  Don't you just love the commercial where he compares himself to Jesus, saying he wants to be "the good shepherd"?  I'm stuck between Perry & Bell.

For the first time I disagree with Mr. Jason Mraz and agree with a fan:

Jason's blog post:

Which came first: The Electrocution or the Dropsies?

This November has already turned out a weeks worth of 80-degree scorchers. I keep forgetting to wear sunscreen as it's not something my Novembers of past prepared me for. I know the east coast is seeing their share of winter already, but damn and bless this global warming all the same. However, this week's sunspot across my crown brought on a sadness yesterday that I could not explain. I was too drained to find its meaning. I knew it wouldn't last so I didn't dwell. I know better being human and all.

I got electrocuted again. Maybe that was it. It had been two years since the last dose of electricity jarred my system through a hot microphone. This time I was dripping wet after a dip in the Jacuzzi and while reaching for the off switch in a dark room, I grabbed an exposed wire and felt the love of man all the way up my left arm into my heart. According to my friends I made a sound no human has made before. I think I'm okay from it. The only result that's been happening regularly is that I spill things. I have a case of the Dropsies so to speak. Apparently it's common when mercury is in retrograde to flip your cereal bowl over into your lap or just let go of a beverage at a surprising instant.

I didn't vote this year either. Again I was too exhausted to find it's meaning. I love my home and I love this life and I do love our "freedoms," however I can't understand the ritual enough to research the characters in the race. My only homework was reading signs plastered in the front lawns across the county. I certainly don't want to vote based on font and landscaping. I'd rather keep quiet, pay my taxes and pray the government leaves me alone to be honest with you.

The idea of political borders is outrageous to me. Sure I know it's been happening for 200 years now but to me that doesn't seem very long in the grand scheme of things. Manmade laws can't be applied everywhere and they don't even make sense to those who still live according to natural laws, which is mostly just the few animals we haven't killed yet anyway.

Humans have been walking around on this planet for hundreds of thousand years. So why all of a sudden is it we need to keep feeding a separatist theory while trying to rule the world? I'm no more American than I am Scottish, unless we keep geographical borders in play, then okay I am of the Americas. Couldn't we just say we are people of earth and be grateful for whichever side of the rock we're facing and leave all others to enjoy their view as well.

In government, is there an ultimate goal for peace? I don't see it, nor have I ever read anything about it from any party or candidate. Therefore, I choose to make my own peace in the sticks of San Diego and pray for the rest of the world to find theirs. My votes don't count, but I believe that my blessings do.

In summary, I think globally & I act locally. I do my part for the good of the environment. And I say thank you to just about everything. What more does a good citizen need to do? I wouldn't fight back if they begged me to.

Alas, my shadow is calling me back to the high tide. I must drop my spirit once again into the sea for the divine exfoliation celebration.

Fans response:

I fully disagree and am highly disappointed.  I think it is a cop-out, quite honestly, and that our generation needs to be more vocal, and not rely on the guy/gal sitting next to you stand up for the issues.  So for all who didn't vote, ok, fine, it's your call, and as an American you have the right not to, but in my opinion its usually done out of laziness or fear.  Fear that you'll make the wrong choice and laziness to register, to go to your local voting location, to research what the candidates stand for, and laziness to just think.  Lindsay, as women we must remember that it was not even 100 years ago that our population was allowed to vote.  We were meant to sit quietly and be pretty.  It's insulting and I want to make sure that those people who fought for my rights before I was even a concept are never taken for granted.

So yeah, Jason, Lindsay, et al, you didn't vote, and yeah it happens all too often, but if the government swings in a direction that you are ethically or morally opposed to, you'll have no real grounds to complain because you didn't vote - you didn't do anything to stop it.

And Jason, this is a hard one for me to express, because I don't know if I even fully agree with that I about to write, here goes...as a public figure who is adored by so many people, why would you advertise that you didn't vote?  I know you are more than a musician, you are a human being, and you bring so much beauty to people in your life, and you have the right to express anything on your mind, and you shouldn't have to hide what you did or did not do.  I get that completely.  But you must know that as a famous and talented musician, whose every word is hung on to like a drop of water in the middle a 40 year treck through the desert (as your blogs daily proves), what you say highly impacts so many people.  Knowing all of this, why would your advertise Not Voting?  An honest and innocent question.  Something I struggle with often.

See? I'm not alone in what I said before (which I took down because evidently, it bothered some people)

There is this person I know who told me that.  I should have clarified.  There is this guy that stated that if one party was promising teacher raises and the other was promising gay marriages, he wouldn't give a damn about gay marriage because he's only interested in getting money for himself.  And he wouldn't care what party promised it to him, he would vote for them.  He's all for gay marriages and loves gay people, but he wouldn't think twice about voting for one issue alone.  That's what I meant; that people should look at all the issues and vote.  Sure we all vote based on what we want.  But voting for one issue alone and ignoring all the others doesn't seem like the ideal thing to do.

HOWEVER, I acknowledge that, that is not what's really going on.  I mean just look at the mainstream Christian church whose top agenda is to get everyone to vote on the one man, one woman marriage thing.  That's all they seem to be focusing on.  I think it's important to look at all the issues, but in all honesty, from what I've heard that's not what's going on.

So, say that Guy#1 was running for president along with guy#2...

#1 is really really pushing for gay marriages and #2 is really really against it. You are saying that if you didn't agree with anything else #1 was saying the you wouldnt vote for him because #2, even tho he isn't for the whole gay thing, he has the right ideas?

Sorry, when I vote, I am going to vote based on how this person can help me. The way your friend was thinking is not bad and I am totally with him. I am going to look out for my own @$$ before I look out for everyone elses.

Sorry.

Don't be sorry.  I'm not.  We'll just agree to disagree.

There is a difference on voting for the person who can help you and voting against a person that you hate because of what they believe.  If it helps you to to vote against someone because you hate what they believe soley on one issue, then that is your choice.

In the end, your going to vote how you like no matter what and so am I and so is the rest of the nation.  All I am saying is these days it seems people are voting based on hate and all about me, me, me.  With everyone I've spoken too, I haven't heard any compassion or anyone say what can I do to help others rather than just me, me, me.

You know, I think its human nature to think about yourself. We are like animals in the wild -  we will fight to save outselves.

Anyway, I am not agreeing with the people who like in the last election voted for Bush because Kerry was for gay marriages, even tho the voter was strongly against war. Does that make sense? I am not agreeing with that whole idea.

By the way, Amy, did Jason Mraz respond to the fan?  If so, can you post it here?
