I'm really angry, bitter and hurt toward my European friends. All of them forgot my birthday though they've known about it for years.

I confronted them on it and they claimed I was being "typical American" in self-promoting.

Though I admit I'm glad for the post here though, I'm very angry about how I was treated by my European friends.

Why do European people act like as if they're better than anyone else...and then complain about us Americans as being "self-centered"?

Their culture views Americans as "yahoo cowboys", basically a bunch of loud cloddish "Texans" (sorry MamaLisa, we know you're not that way)..

I talked with one of my Swedish friends about this and he explained that many Scandinavians detest when people promote something of themselves, it's called "Jantelagen" in their language, which roughly means "a mindset of self-denial". So that's why they didn't acknowledge my birthday even after I did myself.

I'm still a bit hurt but I'm working through it. I am growing distant from them anyway since they're in Europe and I'm not planning on moving their anytime soon (my American goth friends would hunt me down and kill me hehe)

Thanx, it's good that I have TSA friends here too - though it'd be nice to hear from you guys once in a blue moon AHEM :)
