Pray for me, I'm developing a very bad attitude lately around other programmers!
Programmers on message boards are continually telling me how "stupid" I am, how "psychologically incompetent" I am, how "I don't understand basic math", things like that.
Today was very bad, I was told that I don't understand "basic grade-school math", when I was a math major with a 3.0 GPA in college, and the problem I have involves padding zeroes to the left of a STRING "8", not the NUMBER EIGHT!
Yeah, well, if we WERE able to answer your questions, we'd never tell you that you are stupid!! Besides, I can make something up with the best of them! Try me!

How can you pad a string "8" with zeroes in PHP, knowing that PHP interprets all datatype assignments as string but assigns other datatypes to string patterns - thus "8" becoming the integer 8 and being impossible to pad?
You take the pad in your left hand, and using your right hand, you peel off the paper backing. If you are using the pad for entertainment value, apply it to your forhead.
By stringing patterns together, you could end up with quite an unusual piece of clothing. Remember, that two size 8's don't make a 16! You could also try tossing an 8 ball into a glass of V8.
Any other questions?

Please call me. I'd love to chat with you.

Well it turns out in the end I'm vindicated after all!
A Swedish programmer friend of mine (who's in an awesome band) told me that the parameter "pad_length" is the length of the string after it's padded, which is what messed me up, because I understand in basic American English that "pad_length" should mean "the length of the padding".
Oh, Phil. You are so silly. I know what you meant to say was that what I said in answer to your question cleared everything up for you. That's okay. I don't take offense. I'm just glad I could help.
