So... My living situation is a little unique. I am a live-in cook for a nice family in Bloomington. I've been friends with the family for years, and when they wanted someone to do their grocery shopping and cooking for them, I took them up on the offer-- my previous apartment was a bit expensive.
So as things are now, I live for free in this very nice finished half-basement with its own entrance, in exchange for doing the grocery shopping, the cooking, and looking after the cats.
...but not for long. The husband/father has a lot of medical bills (he had a heart transplant 20 YEARS AGO), and the daughter has bills as well (she also went into the hospital recently) and now they can't afford any of their bills.
So now they want to charge me (and my roommate) full rent to continue living in this situation. This we cannot afford-- I told them so, but they're so focused on the fact that they "need the money" that they don't realize they're going to lose us altogether and not get a single cent.
Combine this with the fact that I am a very thrifty and effective grocery shopper, and as much as they can't afford to continue as things are, they CERTAINLY can't afford to lose me.
So that does give me some bargaining leverage to get the cost down, but life will still be difficult, no matter what they want to charge us. And to be frank, I can't justify PAYING them to continue WORKING for them as a cook. Somehow they don't see that as a problem.
So what I'm asking for is advice, prayers, or anything else that might help (including beer). I'll keep everyone posted.

I'm sorry to hear about your predicament my friend. I don't have any advise for either you or your roommate. If you can't come to a reasonable resolution I hope that you and your roommate can find an affordable place to live.

My buddy Chris is in a bad financial situation. He may have to move to a new location. If this happens, Lord, help him and Jonathan find a new and better place for them to live in. Take care of them and help with the finances of the family that they are living with, too. They sound like that they are in a bad place, too. Bless all of them with financial prosperity and help and give them the wisdom to do whatever needs to be done. For in Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.
I hope you and your friend find a way out of this, bud. My sister and her family is moving away from us, and so they will be in a bit of a financial pinch for a while, too. I pray that everything will turn up roses for you guys.
The things you learn about people... I didn't know you were a personal cook! I have one of those too. His name is Teddy. And he gets "perks"!
I'm sorry this is happening to you, Chris. You and your roommate will be in my prayers! Have you sat down with the people and tried to reason with them? Of course, it's hard to reason with people when it comes to money!

Well, as usual, "Mama" made everything better (not you, Mamalisa- although your very presence IS helpful). When Karen, the mother/wife came home from work today, she ran into my room in a tizzy because she found out what Dick (the father/husband) had said to me today.
Basically, it's not as bad as it sounds. We may end up having to pay some minimal rent, but we'll still be seeing a gigantic savings from the old apartment. What happens is Dick sits around all day and fusses over the budget, and eventually blows up, finding the point of least resistance and hitting it with all he's got.
This can be super-frustrating, but since Karen is the one who's REALLY running the show (hee hee), we won't be shouldered with the full force of their financial problems.
So I'm sorry to have rushed in here with a doomsday declaration... we probably won't have to move- we probably won't even have to pay expensive rent.
Thank GOD for all of you, and THANK GOD that someone reasonable is actually in charge of this household!!!
-Chris

Oh please don't misunderstand. I in NO way am discreditting the prayers of all of you, other friends, and my parents. There's nothing better than asking a huge group of people to pray and then having to tell them "thanks, it worked" within two hours!!!!!
YEAY FOR GOD
