I know not everyone may support gay marriage, but I have to thank God for a great victory for the gay community today. Everyone read the news clipping below!!
POLITICS OF DISCRIMINATION AND DISTRACTION FAIL AS SENATE RESOUNDINGLY DEFEATS FEDERAL MARRIAGE AMENDMENT
‘President Bush and the Republican leadership gambled their dwindling political capital on a discriminatory amendment and came up empty,’ said Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese. ‘With the addition of Senators Specter and Gregg, not only did every senator who voted against discrimination in 2004 stand with us today but momentum is on the side of equality.’
WASHINGTON — The Senate voted 49 to 48 today to defeat the Federal Marriage Amendment, a measure that would have denied marriage to same-sex couples and seriously threatened civil unions and domestic partnerships. Seven Republicans joined 41 Democrats in voting down the measure, which opponents said was a politically motivated distraction from real challenges facing the country.
Thank You, Jesus! It is only a matter of time, now...
One day, our children and grandchildren will look back to this time and feel the same way that we feel when we look back at the time when black people were slaves to either a cotton field, or to Jim Crow laws, and ask, "How in the world can people be so ignorant...so cruel...and so inhumane?"
I'm still worried. It may have been defeated this session. However, there's always next time. 3 people didn't vote. They still needed to get 60 votes to up it to the House--and they weren't close. From there, then they just needed a 2/3 vote majority to start putting it into action. To amend the constitution...that's something HUGE!! If it passed, I'd be refusing to recite the pledge of allegiance, if I were still in school. I couldn't pledge my loyalty to a country which openly discriminates.

So what happens next? Can it be voted on again? Or does a new amendment have to be proposed? (I think I slept through Government & Eco in high school!)

If I think correctly, and I know squat about the government..it's gone for this session/year. So, it always has a chance of being presented as a bill next year, though????
Where's the smart people when you need them??!!
