This might sound like a flippant answer, but Im serious: buy a night vision scope if you think youll enjoy it. A few amateur astronomers have been fiddling with night vision systems for years, but it hasnt been particularly popular. From reviews Ive read, their performance for astronomy hasnt been all that good, and theyre not cheap. If you live outside the US, you cant even buy the best ones on the market.

I gather that some birdwatchers use night vision scopes. Perhaps theyd be handy for observing nocturnal birds, though you wouldnt be able to see any coloration.

As with any expensive equipment, its probably best to see if you can borrow or rent night vision scopes to try out. Then you can make an informed decision about buying one.
