After reading the book, which is something I think is neccessary before attempting to speak confidently about it, it's really clear that it is a mystery/suspense work of fiction. And not really a very good one... The foreshadowing is overdone to the point the reader quickly catches on and discovers the "suprise" pages/chapters before the author reveals it.
That being said, I did find the book intriguing.
Why? Primarily because the Catholic church & many prominent Protestants are vociferously condemning it.
I was really interested in the "true" parts of the book or the parts that lend themselves to credibility... For example: The author speaks authoritatively about art history, Leonardo Da Vinci, etc. That made me want to learn more about those subjects. The author also wrote about church history, how church decisions are made, how power is abused, etc... Again, leaving me very interested in these topics.
He took a very "outlandish" idea and used real situations, real locations, real people and real history to weave a story that leaves the reader satisifed with having read a "decent" thriller, curious to learn more about various topics, and just maybe, a little reflective about his or her faith.
That last part, leaving the reader a little reflective about his or her faith is the part that has the Church in an uproar.
Why? What does the Church have to fear?
Maybe, just maybe, people are going to begin seeking answers to the more challenging questions... Maybe people are no longer going to accept a belief just because a powerful Church establishes it. Maybe people are going to take personal responsibility for discovering what it means to be a person of faith in today's modern world.
I think the massive interest and controversy associated with this book should compel churches to act. NOT to reinforce existing battle lines, but to figure out what it is going to take to deliver a contemporary message of Christianity that actually speaks to the masses.
Deriding dissidents and writing off "unbelievers" as deceived is simply an attempt to abdicate responsibility for the failure of the church to speak a coherent, transforming, and powerful message of God's love and the essence of Christianity to today's world.

There will be a special about the "DaVinci Code", and what the book and movie is based upon, tonight on the National Geographic Channel at 8:00 PM. I plan to watch. Then I will come back here and say what I think about all of this nonsense.
Personally...I think that if DaVinci himself was alive today, and was trying to gather in all of this stuff about his works, he would just simply FLIP! Also, I think that the reason why so many church people are going on the defensive about this book is because they didn't mind it when LaHaye and Jenkins started using the bible to promote their works of fiction, but they don't like it when the same media in fiction books (and that is EXACTLY what BOTH sets of these books are...FICTION) is used to make a work that tries to distort people's faith in the "fundie" interpretation of the bible.

P.S.- By the way...here is a bit of FACT from church history that should make you fans of this book wonder if you are being lied to by Brown and his "research": the ACTUAL vote at the meeting of church leaders at Nicea was 316 in favor of the doctrine of the deity of Jesus Christ to 2 voting against it.
Not exactly the "very close vote" that Brown says what happened at the council of Nicea...
SEE! The guy that invented the "Priory of Sion's" list of members with DaVinci's name on it, and the rest of what Dan Brown "gleaned" (more like STOLE) to make his book, made the whole thing up! I can't believe that people are THAT gullible to believe such nonsense as historical fact!
But then again...Bush did say that he had "proof" of WMD's in Iraq...
I can't believe that I missed my "Deal Or No Deal" for this garbage!

Here is a file that I got from a Christian website that talks about the DaVinci Code's "facts". I hope that it will settle whatever doubts you might have gotten about the divinity of Jesus.
You will need Adobe Reader to read it. It is a .pdf file.
Having read large tracts of the Gnostic Gospels, I can confidently say that this movie is as dangerous as some people have said, simply because while questioning is a good thing, questioning w/o having access to facts leads to disaster.
There are enough holes in the Gnostic Gospels to drive a semi through! It's unreal! The Nag Hammadi scrolls, though discovered before the Dead Sea Scrolls at Qumran, were carbon-dated to be considerably NEWER than many of the latter-discovered New Testament manuscripts (NT manuscripts currently go as far back as early 2nd century AD; Nag Hammadi scrolls are no older than early 3rd century AD)
