I don't go to the theater too often but we rent movies often. Last weekend we watched:
The Village - not bad but not scary like I wanted.
40 Year Old Virgin - HILARIOUS - so funny! Loved it!
Team America - Funny, very political, loved the 'panthers'
Jarhead - pretty good but not as good as I expected or not as controversial as I expected or not as something as I expected! It was crazy to see how it rained oil though. I fear for those soldiers - what future ramifications that might have for them - having been in that. And the whole macho military thing makes me mad sometimes - but I can't imagine how it feels to be doing what they are doing so I don't judge.

I saw the Village, actually in the theater, and I was very disappointed in it. It wasn't as scary as I thought it would be. Also, I usually never "get" the symbolism or the "message", but I thought this movie was about controlling people through religious fear.
Last weekend Amy & I watched an old documentary called Silverlake Life. It was the story of a gay couple who both had AIDS. It was very sad & disturbing, but neither of us could stop watching it.
Right now, from Netflix, I have A Home at the End of the World, Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist, and a movie called Three Extremes. I think that one is 3 horror stories by Japanese directors. Hopefully, I'll get to watch them this weekend while we are vegging at the beach house!!

I thought that movie was just made to drum up support for the war, so I always avoided watching it. I thought it would be nothing but
"Yew ain't got prahd! Yew ain't got curridge! Yew ain't got ****!" "Ah'm heeyur sayivin' this cunntry cuzz ah b'leave in G.Dubya!" "Ah'm sayivin' this cunntry fur freydum, fur mah cunntry, an' fur MAH MOMMA!" (cue fake-ass patriotic music with a hip-hop twist)
...but if it's not really like that, maybe I'll pay attention next time.

Yeah, if anything Jarhead was anti-war while being pro soldier. It's actually a memoir of a soldier who was there in Desert Storm - so a true story. And it seemed pretty believable. I think that's what I liked about it. It didn't seem overdone.

All I can say, is that was an hour and a half I wish God could give back to me. I'm such a horror movie fanatic...but, there was absolutely no plotline, nor character development...even during the gross parts...where people were having body parts cut off, and sliced open, and whatnot...I just thought to myself, "Show me something new...scare me!" It never happened. I was disappointed.

I watched two movies during our weekend away. Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist was lame and kind of boring. But A Home at the End of the World was very good! It was one of those rare movies made from a book that actually stays fairly true to the book. It is worth the time to see it, if you get a chance. (Though the book was better!)

We watched "Sin City" last night and although I thought the style was interesting I fell asleep halfway thru. But it could have been the vodka tonic I had.

Amy's been bugging us to sit down & watch Rent. Oh my gosh! While it was a very good movie, it left an ache in my heart. I just want to lay down & cry!!

I'm actually a tough cookie to crack when it comes to crying. It takes a lot to make me cry. But the movie Rent made me think of too many friends and their life situations.

I saw "Cruising", starring Al Pacino as a NY cop trying to find a serial killer that kills gay men, the other night and...IT WAS AWFUL! There was more redeeming quality in a regular gay PORN flick than there was in THIS piece of "retro" filth. I can see now why so many gay leaders protested it. And why it won 3 Golden Raspberry Awards for being the WORST movie of 1980...It stank!
I strongly second Jeffrey's suggestion that everyone NOT watch this movie. It's depressing, confusing, boring, and violent-- all rolled into one very early 80's package.

Oh- something occurred to me recently about a movie that I have only seen once, but really liked it: Welcome to the Dollhouse- with a quite-young Heather Matarazzo.
Has anyone seen WTTD? What did you think of it?

Hey, Jeffrey! Welcome to the Dollhouse is ... an ODD movie, but touching. It's definitely not horror-- although when 7th-grade Heather Matarazzo tries to dress up "sexy" to impress her high school crush, things definitely do look frightening
It's basically an "I've felt that way" movie about a young girl who is completely and utterly at odds with the world around her-- or should I say- the WORLD is at odds with this girl...? She's awkward, not conventionally pretty, clearly the unloved sibling-- oh and did I mention AWKWARD? She has a disfunctional "boyfriend" who threatens "I'm gonna rape you after school" every day-- and she actually goes to MEET him! No rape actually occurs- I don't think they grasp what rape really is.
Anyway I don't usually like "feel sorry for me" movies, but this one was so ridiculous, and the unfortunate things that happened to the girl had absolutely no affect on her AT ALL-- it actually ends with this feeling of extreme hopefulness for the girl's future. I don't know... it was just a very, very strange movie that spoke to me so perfectly I'm not sure anyone else could see it the same way.
