Iraqi cleric wants gays killed in "most severe way"

In the midst of sectarian violence that threatens to drag Iraq into civil war, the country's influential Shiite cleric Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani has issued a violent death order against gays and lesbians on his Web site, according to London-based LGBT human rights groups OutRage.


Written in Arabic, the fatwa comes from a press conference with the powerful religious cleric, where he was asked about the judgment on sodomy and lesbianism. “Forbidden,” Sistani answered, according to OutRage, “Punished, in fact, killed. The people involved should be killed in the worst, most severe way of killing.”


Considering Sistani's stature and influence within the Iraqi Shiite majority, OutRage member Ali Hili declared the cleric's statements extremely dangerous.


“Sistani's murderous homophobic incitement has given a green light to Shia Muslims to hunt and kill lesbians and gay men,” said Hili. “We hold Sistani personally responsible for the murder of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender Iraqis. He gives the killers theological sanction and encouragement.”


Sistani is a leading member and voice of the Shiite sect, which in Iraq has approximately twice as many followers as the Sunni sect. (The Advocate)

Jeffrey, we know a young man who was "over there helping these people" and was severely injured.  He lost both legs.  But if he were able, he'd be back there again "helping these people".  The media only shows the bad side.  The soldiers that are there see the every day people, the moms & dad, the kids, the young people just starting their lives.  They see God's children just trying to muddle through this life, just like you and me.

Thanks, Mama. I know that we are doing good over there...it's just that I don't understand why they hate us so much. We ALL are trying to help them (at the cost of $200 million a day), but it seems like that when we help them, these sick "haters" come on the scene and try to scare everyone into doing what THEY want done. I know that most Muslims aren't terrorists, but how can we get rid of these "Phelpses in turbins" without stepping on any religious toes?


I just wish that it would hurry up and be all over. I have friends whose sons are in Iraq and I would hate to see any of them get that awful letter from D.C. telling them that they're coming home in a flag-draped coffin. Fortunately, in my state, the goverment has made it illegal for Phelps and his crazies to protest at the funerals of these fallen angels in uniform. I just wish that all of the terrorists, both Bin Laden and Phelps, of the entire world would just go away and let the rest of us live in peace!
