The bible says there are false religions. Too bad the bible doesn't list them by name. Which brings me to a few questions; can one really, truly respect what one disagrees with? And in respecting another person's right to believe a different religion, am I not just giving false respect to a religion that I think is false?
A friend and I have been wondering about this and he emailed me this article called Equal respect for all religions is impossible. I thought it was interesting to read, but I know many people will have many different views on it:
Equal respect for all religions is impossible Dr. Ramendra It has often been advocated by some well-intentioned persons that in interest of communal harmony we ought to cultivate equal respect for all religions. On face value, it appears to be a laudable advice, but a closer scrutiny reveals that this is an impossible as well as undesirable ideal to follow.
A person can have equal respect for all religions only if either he knows nothing about various religions or if he has a totally non-serious attitude towards them or both.
Take the question of existence of god, which is central to many religions. Zoroastrianism, Judaism, Christianity, Islam and Sikhism are monotheistic religions. In Hinduism we find anthropomorphism, polytheism, monotheism, monism and even atheism existing side by side. Finally, Buddhism and Jainism are atheistic or non-theistic religions.
Now, either god exists, or he does not. It cannot be the case that god both exists and does not exist. All available evidence suggests that it is impossible for god to exist. But, in any case, a person can either believe that god exists or he can believe that god does not exist. How can he have equal respect for both these beliefs? Or, in other words, how can he have equal respect for both theistic and atheistic religions? If he believes in the existence of god, he will have more respect for theistic religions. On the other hand, if he is a rationalist and atheist, he is likely to have more respect for atheistic religions than for theistic ones.
Again, most of religions including Jainism believe in the existence of soul. Buddhism, on the other hand, rejects the existence of soul. Now, let us imagine two persons -- one who believes in existence of god and soul, say A; and another who rejects both these beliefs as false, say B. How is it possible for both A and B to have equal respect for Jainism and Buddhism? It is natural that B will have more respect for Buddhism than for Jainism and vice versa. One cannot have equal respect for both truth and falsehood. It is not even desirable to promote equal respect for truth and falsehood.
Let us turn our attention to theistic religions. According to Christianity, Jesus was the "son of god" and the whole of the Bible including the New Testament is "revealed" by god. This belief is, however, rejected by Zoroastrianism, Judaism and Islam. Again, according to Islam, Mohammed was a "messenger of allah" and the Koran is "revealed". Now, a person may believe that the first statement is true whereas the second one is false. Alternatively, he may believe that the second statement is true whereas the first one is false. Thirdly, he may believe that both these statements are true; and finally, he may believe that both these statements are false. In the first case, he is a Christian and will have more respect for Christianity. In the second case, he is a Muslim and is certain to have more respect for Islam. In the third case, if the person is really serious, then he is likely to turn schizophrenic, because the teachings of Jesus and Mohammed are different, if not contradictory, on many important issues. In the fourth case, the person is not likely to have any respect for either of these religions.
Thus, equal respect for all religions is not possible. Different religions make different truth-claims, and one cannot have equal respect for truth as well as falsehood. As pointed out earlier, it is also not desirable to promote equal respect for truth and falsehood. What is both possible and desirable is to have equal respect for all human beings irrespective of their religious beliefs; or equal respect for human beings belonging to different religious groups, including those who do not believe in any religion. In other words, what we need for promoting communal harmony is humanism and not a muddle-headed approach towards religion.

Maybe it's not that we need to respect the religion; rather, we should not judge another's choice of belief. Our place is to love, nothing more. We spread the Gospel through our love, not our words.
Jesus said, "I am THE way, THE truth and THE life...NO ONE comes to the Father, BUT BY ME."
Now, either Jesus lied, which we KNOW isn't possible, or He was deranged, which we KNOW that He wasn't...or He was telling the truth: that the only way to God is through Himself.
However, we also know that GOD, not us, is the one who does ANY of the work of saving a lost soul. Therefore, NOBODY winds up separated from God for eternity by accident. God HIMSELF, through the work of the Holy Spirit, shows a person their need for Christ and brings that person into a saving knowledge of Himself. If anybody winds up in hell, it is because THEY reject Him, NOT because they didn't go and "sign up" in some dry and dead church service.
God brings US into HIMSELF by bringing HIMSELF into US!
but Religion is what is wrong with our world... most wars are started over religion today... in the past it was over land or water, but today it seems to be religion...
That is why I say I am spiritual not religious...
Someone can be religous and not spiritual... Look Fred Phelps, James Dobson, Jerry Falwell... just to name a few...
I like what the Dali Lama Said... and even Billy Graham said something similiar this spring in an artilce in Newsweek... His Holiness the Dali Lama said... that although he was Buddhist, he was not about to say that it was the way for ever person... it works for him... but just as there are some several billion people in our world... there are several billion paths to God... and I agree... Each of our spiritual journey's, path's/ expereince is personal... Our relationship with the God of our understand is personal... and I think the best think out of this thread is to live in love and show our faith and our spirituaity from a place of love... because JESUS was love... do I believe everything in the Bible is true... do I believe everything attributed to Jesus in the Bible was said by Jesus... Well... that is between me and God... but a hint to my answer... is the Bible was written my human beings... and human beings make mistakes... look how they screwed up the scriptures on homosexuality... But there is no mistaking the COMMON Theme of the teachings of the Bible... LOVE: LOVE of God, LOVE of Neighbor and Love of oneself... and Forgiveness, mercy, grace, and I think I will stick with the Big Themes... and not get hung up on the details... If I can just manage to love everyone... that would be a huge accomplishment... Hell, I don't even love myself... like I need to.
Well those are my thoughts... for anyone who cares... LOVE! The Greatest Gift!
Hugs, Jerry

I found myself agreeing with almost everything he said in this last article from August 2006 (from Newsweek on the MSNBC site). By the way, Billy Graham's wife Ruth died a little over a month ago; and now he is in the hospital. I had the pleasure of meeting him once and attending church with one of his daughters and her family Anne Graham Lotz, In Raleigh NC before I moved to California. My prayers go out to Billy and to Anne and her children & Husband Dr. Lotz... I am not to fond of Billy's son Franklin... he is leaning towards becoming the next Jerry Falwell... I think he will as soon as his father passes. Hugs, Jerry
