Owls symbolize wisdom in Greco-Roman cultures, often seen by the light of a moon, the symbol of the Goddess of Wisdom, Diana. This is where the term "a wise old owl" came from. In bible days, owls were often associated with bad omens of desolation since they were often seen only at night, hunting in the desolate places of the wilderness for rodents.

However, I don't think that this was a "sign" from God as to how to change your life. Proverbs says, "Seek wisdom...And in your getting, get understanding." The pursuit of these things are what all Christians should do throughout their entire lives. Keep praying and walking with God, open to all venues of advice. The advice that he tells you could be to just "wait on the Lord".
